Zeigler - Gary Hagler, 81, of Zeigler, passed away Monday, November 20, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Memorial visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 22, 2017, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Gary was born on July 26, 1936, in Royalton, to Bernie and Maude Mae (Nelson) Hagler. He married Joy Basinger on June 23, 1962, in Royalton.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Joy Hagler of Zeigler; son, Colin Hagler of Atlanta; daughter, Carrie Swain of Carterville; grandchildren, Madi, Hannah and Zackary Swain, all of Carterville; and sister, Betty Borella of Santa Barbara, California.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Marty and Matthew Hagler; son-in-law, William “Brutus” Swain; sisters, Ruth Logan, Mary Jo Cavaretta and June Robbins; and brothers, Jack and Nelson Hagler.
He honorably served 3 tours in the Navy during Vietnam.
Gary was a Royalton Police Officer for several years. He had also worked as a security guard at John A. Logan College in Carterville and for Freeman Coal Company #3 and #6.
He was a member of the Zeigler American Legion Post and Royalton V.F.W.
Gary was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, camping and playing golf.
