Shirley Joyce (Milton) Hill

April 29, 1939 ~ November 3, 2017 (age 78) 78 Years Old

Carterville - Shirley Joyce Hill, 78, of Carterville, peacefully went to be with her Lord on Friday, November 3, 2017, at The Anchor at River to River in Marion, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30, Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Pastor Bob Wynn officiating. Burial will be in Hanks Hill Cemetery in rural Marion. Visitation will be after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home in Carterville. 

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to Alzheimer’s Association.

Shirley was born on April 29, 1939, in Cache, Illinois, to Otho and Agnes (Lipe) Milton. She married Herbert “Burr” Hill on May 9, 1975, in Carterville. He preceded her in death on April 5, 2009.

She is survived by her loving children, Angie (John) Oetjen of Carterville, Herbie Hill of Johnston City, Debbie Jones of Carbondale, Robbie (Pam) Hill of Thompsonville and Kim Hill of Marion; brother, Arvil Milton of Springfield, Missouri; sister, Sharon Murley of Anna; grandchildren, Heath Hill, Sierra Thorson, Derek Oetjen, Dusty Oetjen, Nikki Sowels, Dakota Hill, Tashia Roye, Justin Culp, Emily Hill, Autumn Hill, Cortney VanVoorhis, and A.J. Boone; 20 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; dear friends, Linda (Freeman) Merrell, Della (Ben) Grimes, Harvey (Janet) Anderson, Sue (the late Larry) Vincent, Toby Thomas, Loretta Milton, and her church family.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert “Burr” Hill; grandparents; brother, Donald Milton; sister, Jerry Sauerbrunn; and grandson, Cory Hill.

In her younger days, Shirley worked in the factory at Smoler Brothers and American Magnetics. She later worked as a sales clerk for J.C. Penny. Her greatest job was being a housewife and mother.

She was a member of Love & Truth Church in Carterville.

Shirley volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader Assistant to the Carterville troop.

She was a talented seamstress. Shirley enjoyed tending to her vegetable and flower gardens, traveling, and attending church activities. She also loved to go camping and served as co-host along with “Burr” at Crab Orchard and Hilltop Camp Grounds, where they meet many acquaintances and made many friends.  

Shirley loved pets and had a special bond with Zinger, the therapy dog at the Anchor.
