William “Bill” Woodrow Penrod, 103, of Carterville, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2022, at Parkway Manor in Marion.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Don Yewell officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Veterans’ Honor Flight.
Bill was born January 21, 1919, in Carterville, to William Leslie and Grace (Crain) Penrod. He married Loretta Hall on June 20, 1939, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Together they had shared 73 wonderful years before her passing on November 21, 2012.
He is survived by his daughter, Suzy Ward; daughter-in-law, Rosie Penrod; grandchildren and their spouses, Krista and Pete Hunter, Kyle and Lynn Penrod, and Sam Ward; great-grandchildren, Olivia Hunter, Ashlie Penrod, Shelby (Kaden) Hundley, Brant Penrod, Kolby Penrod, Rilyn Joleigh Ward, and Gracie Ward; and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Phillip Penrod; son-in-law, Sam Ward; sisters, Genieve Green, Mary Marie Brasse, Betty Penrod, Jewell Robinson; half-sister, Sybil Neber; and brother, Robert Penrod.
He honorably served our country in the United States Army during WWII.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Carterville for over 50 years.
Bill had been an inspector at Maytag for over 25 years.
He was an avid golfer and loved to cheer on his beloved Cubbies. Bill was also a sports fan, from watching college football to watching Sam play baseball.
