Walter Lee Brieschke, 77, of Carterville, passed away Monday, January 31, 2022, at home, with his wife by his side.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 12, 2022, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Herrin, with Pastor Michael Henson officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis at a later date. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, February 11, 2022, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville.

He was born January 8, 1945, in Red Bud, Illinois, to Harold Ernst and Mabel Anna (Alms) Brieschke. Walter married Mary Lou (Bahr) Hackett on August 9, 1997, in Carterville.
Walter is survived by his wife, Mary Hackett Brieschke of Carterville; step-children, Jonathan (Margrethe) Hackett of Vancouver Island, BC Canada, Michael Hackett of Edwardsville, Illinois, and Matthew (Andrea Abney) Hackett of La Quinta, California; grandchildren, Julia and William Hackett; brother, Larry Brieschke of Auburn, California; sister, Carolynne Schmidt of Buckeye, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Walter honorably served our country in the United States Marine Corps.
He worked as a Field Supervisor at Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, as well as in the Law Library. Walter was also an Instructor at Triton Junior College and retired as a counselor from Menard Penitentiary.
