Sue Cavins Obituary

Sue Carolyn (Wenzel) Cavins, 88, of Carterville passed away Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Carbondale Hospital surrounded by her family.

 

Sue was born May 30, 1934, in Carbondale, Illinois, to Anthony Alton Wenzel and Virginia (Cole) Wenzel. She married Randal E. Cavins on September 8, 1950, in Carterville. They were married for 68 years before he passed away in 2019.

 

She is survived by son, Mark Wenzel Cavins; daughters, Debra Sue Futrell, Rita Jo Cook, Sarah Ellen Vannoy and Judith Lynn (& Dennis) Sullivan; sister, Margaret Kay Threlkeld; and brother, Michael Wenzel. Sue was the matriarch of her family which included 23 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
 

Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Randal; her parents; her son, Randal Jay Cavins; her brother, Tom Wenzel; son-in-law, Bill Cook; daughter-in-law, Alice Cavins; as well as granddaughter, Tara Cook; and grandson, Scott Cavins.

After she raised all six of her children, she decided to go back to school and she graduated with a degree from John A. Logan College. She spent over 7 years employed as a secretary at Hill House Drug and Counseling Center. In 1994, she went to work for Southern Illinois University and retired from the Law Department in 2012.  Her hobbies included reading, gardening, nutrition, and teaching.

The most treasured part of Sue's life was her family and her relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. She was a mighty prayer warrior for the Kingdom. She loved to help people, she loved to teach God's word and she loved to share Christ with others.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 23, 2022, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Pastor Kerry Cox officiating. Burial will be in North Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will begin after 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at the funeral home.
