Russell Spencer Obituary

Russell P. Spencer, 90, of Carterville, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2022, at Parkway Manor in Marion.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 4, 2022, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Rev. Brad Harlow officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Shiloh Cemetery in Whittington. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to First Baptist Church or Gum Drops.

Russell was born November 2, 1931, in Benton, to Vernon and Lorene (Perry) Spencer. He was united in marriage to Delores (Simpson) Spencer on January 29, 1955, in Benton. Together they shared 67 wonderful years.

He is survived by his wife, Delores Spencer; sons and their spouses, Dennis (Kim) Spencer of Carterville, David (Donna) Spencer of Benton, Craig (Suzanne) Spencer of Franklin, Tennessee, and Duane (Kelly) Spencer of Carterville; sister, Marietta (Dwight) Sneed; grandchildren, Denise (Nathan) Ridgway, Lisa (Justin) Vannoy, Laura (Dustin) Haltom, Katie (Kenny) Krause, Jenna (Zach) McGoldrick, Michael (Kaci) Spencer, Wesley Spencer, Zoya, Taylor, Dasha, Jonathan, and Amelia Reiss, Samantha (Alex) Colbrook, Alexis (Chad) Welch; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents; sister, LaVerne Lovin; brother, Larry Spencer; and grandson, Alan Spencer.

He honorably served our country in the United States Marine Corps.

He attended Coyne Electric College in Chicago for 2 years. Russell was an electrician at SIU-C and retired after more than 30 years of service.  He was a member of IBEW Local 702 for 72 years.

Russell was a member of Murdale Baptist Church but had also attended First Baptist Church in Carterville.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed quail hunting and fishing. Russell particularly enjoyed going on hunting trips to California with his sons.

Russell loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids.
