Ronald “Ron” Richard Hines, 82, of Carterville, passed away on Monday, March 16, 2026, at Manor Court in Carbondale.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carbondale, with Pastor Jay Holden officiating. Burial will be in Blairsville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m., Sunday, at the church.
Memorial contributions can be made to John A. Logan Athletics or to Our Savior Lutheran Church.
Ron was born on April 6, 1943, in Los Angeles, California, to Jean Marie (Jones) and Robert Hines. He married Mary Sue Clifford on June 10, 1967, in Delavan, Illinois. Together, they shared more than 45 wonderful years of marriage before her passing on August 23, 2012.
He is survived by his children, Joe (Gayla) Hines, Nathan (Christy) Hines, and Mary Margaret Hines; his sister, Barbara (Bill) McDaniel; grandchildren, Susanne (John) Loeser, Mara (Kyle) Yandow, Alexandra (Charlie) Bailey, Joe Hines, Jodie Hines, Paul (Nicole) Hines, and Kate Hines; great-grandchildren, Magnolia Green, Lenora Loeser, Wade Green, and Olive Yandow; and his nieces, Lori (Scott) Mansur, and Shelley (Jim) Steele.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Mary Sue.
Southern Illinois University brought Ron to Southern Illinois, where he began a distinguished career in broadcasting and developed a lifelong pride in the 1967 Salukis NIT Basketball Championship.
Ron dedicated much of his professional life to sports and storytelling. He served as the Sports Information Director at Southeast Missouri State University for over 29 years. He later became well known as the “play-by-play man” for basketball and baseball at John A. Logan College in Carterville and was affectionately recognized as the voice of Southern Illinois through his work as an announcer for WJPF Radio. His work was more than a career—it was his passion.
In his younger years, Ron was instrumental in helping establish the Goreville Gazette, reflecting his lifelong love of communication and community.
Ron was a faithful member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carbondale.
