Ronald Harold Howell Sr., 80, of Hurst, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, surrounded by his family.  

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, July 22, 2024, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Pastor Greg Parker officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. Private burial will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions can be made to the family.

He was born January 17, 1944, in Chicago, he was the son of the late Homer and Evelyn (Hodges) Howell.

Ronald was a loving husband to Linda Sue Jarvis with who he shared 61 years of marriage, and together, they raised four children: Mary Sue (Leonard) Waldron, Penny (Myles) Childress, Ron (Celina) Howell and Denny Howell, who in turn filled Ronald’s life with the joy of 15 grandchildren: Larry (Vicki), Paul, Bronica, Mandy, Jesse, Corey (Jordan), Harley, Alex, Paul (Lynsey), Alexis, Hannah, Hayden, Landon, James, Denny Jr.; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Leonard Waldron; sister, Linda King; brother-in-law, Bob Stewart; and his parents.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sister Doris Stewart, brother Jerry Howell and his beloved dog Bella.

Mr. Howell, affectionately known as “Frog” was a member of the Zeigler Eagles Lodge, and spent many years working at the family-owned Sunoco service station in addition to working at Plantscape Nursery in Herrin. Ronald has also worked in the coal mines for a period of time. In retirement he enjoyed “tinkering” in the yard rebuilding lawn equipment, doing woodwork and spending time with his grandchildren.
