Paul Eugene Escue, 94, of rural Makanda, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at the CLC Center of the Marion Veterans Administration Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with the Pastor Jesse Hinds officiating. Burial will be in Gentry Cemetery in rural Makanda with military rites. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Marion VA-Hospice Unit at the CLC. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Paul was born on July 14, 1930, in Carbondale, to Cleo Monroe and Elsie (Cox) Escue. He married Creasey “Pat” Bailey on October 8, 1954, in Indiana. She preceded him in death on May 28, 2020.
He is survived by his nephews, Al (Jeannie) Yancey, Danny Yancey, Ernie Escue, Tim (Becky) Yancey, David Yancey (Charlie Kent), Lonnie (Jill) Escue; nieces, Sharlyn (Joe) Slivinski, Kathy Escue (Sally Niemeyer), Debbie (Chuck) Richardson, Tina (Gary) Eckert; many great nieces, nephews and friends, especially his cousin, Wayne Cox, who was invaluable for his assistance helping take care of Paul in his final days; and Tim and Becky’s dog, Chester.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Pat.
Paul honorably served his country in the United States Army and later dedicated 15 years of service to the Illinois Department of Transportation. He retired from his role at the Army Reserve building in Marion.
A proud man of faith, he loved singing in gospel quartets, bringing joy to those who heard him sing. Paul also found great satisfaction in taking care of his home, especially mowing the yard, which he always kept immaculate. In his downtime, Paul enjoyed relaxing with an episode of Wheel of Fortune.
He was a long-time member of Cottage Home Baptist Church and attended Lone Oak Baptist Church along with his wife, Pat.
