Pastor George Donald Calhoun

Pastor George Donald Calhoun, 81, of Carterville, passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, Saturday, December 10, 2022, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Pastors Diane Rice and Gary Darnell officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Willowrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00, Saturday, at the funeral home.

George was born April 3, 1941, in Carbondale, to George Thomas and Elizabeth Ann (Darnell) Calhoun. He married Connie Joan Godwin on April 6, 1962, in Carbondale. Together they have shared 60 wonderful years.

He is survived by his wife, Connie Calhoun of Carterville; daughters, Lena Christine (David) Marks and Cynthia Marie (Greg) Jones; son, George Elias (Christine) Calhoun; grandchildren, Kimberly (Anthony) McCann, Miranda McClain, Dave Marks, Bradly Marks, Elias, Elisa, Allison, Isaiah, Amanda, Sierrah, and Elijah Calhoun; great-grandchildren, Rayelynn, Levi and Kinsley Marks, Jacob and Megan McClain, Kaylee and Kaitlyn McCann, and Violet Calhoun; sisters, Margaret Taylor, Rose Hardy, and Carolyn Hanner; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  

George was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Tottleben, Linda Calhoun; niece, Debbie; nephew, Billy Tottleben.

He honorably served our country in the United States Air Force.

George had worked for Chester Mental Health as a guard for many years. He later worked for Mobile Home Services and Sales. He retired after more than 35 years of faithful devotion to Pastoring the folks at God’s House of Prayer in Carterville.

He was a talented painter who enjoyed painting quilt blocks and t-shirts.
