Nancy was born on July 4, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan, to Walter Hedrick and Mary Evelyn (Halstead) Hensley. She married Wendell Ray Yewell on June 23, 1950, at the First Baptist Church in Carterville. He preceded her in death on October 31, 1988.

She is survived by the light of her life, her daughter, Ann Spencer; grandchildren, Heather (Kyle) Filson, Jennifer (Brent) Sizemore, and Wes Spencer (Victoria Trapani); great-grandchildren, Ian Bogard, Ali Sizemore, Logan Filson, and Kylie Filson; sisters-in-law, Connie Hensley and Doris Hensley; plus numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, George D. and James “Jim” W. Hensley; and grandson, Alan Spencer.

A lifelong resident and pillar of her community, Nancy was a proud member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Beta Mu Chapter for over 60 years and a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Carterville for more than 70 years. She devoted over 26 years of combined service to the Carterville Public Library and the Anne West Lindsey District Library Board, where she held every office and played an instrumental role in planning and assisting in the construction of the new library building.

Nancy began her career in 1949 with Steffes Concrete & Block Company, owned by Matt Steffes. She later worked with Steffes Lumber Company and Steffes Construction Company until 1962. From 1962 to her retirement in 1997, she served as Secretary, Treasurer, and Office Manager for Steffes Construction Company, demonstrating unmatched dedication and professionalism.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Nancy was deeply involved in her community. She volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels, served on the Benevolence Committee at her church, and was an active member of Crab Orchard Golf Course and the Crab Orchard Ladies Organization. She had a passion for golf, played cards in three clubs for many years, and enjoyed taking porcelain painting classes with Debbie Menesse.

Nancy will be remembered for her warmth, wisdom, sense of humor, and unwavering commitment to her family, friends, and community. Her legacy of kindness and service will live on in the many lives she touched.
