Mikell Miskell Obituary

Mikell Terence Miskell, 80, of Carterville, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Landmark Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, April 15, 2024, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale, with Revs. Kerry Bean and Karen Knodt officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Anne West Lindsey District Library or to the Humane Society of Southern Illinois.

Mikell was born on September 24, 1943, in Carbondale, to Clarence Lawrence and Mabel Elizabeth (Dickson). He married Elaine Henderson on June 17, 1978, in Carterville.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Elaine Miskell; son, Andrew (Leah) Miskell of Northglenn, Colorado; brother, Darrell (Suzanne) Miskell of Tulsa, Oklahoma; mother-in-law, Irene Robinson; sister-in-law, Eileen (John) Gury of Plymouth, Michigan; brothers-in-law, Bob (Cheryl) Henderson of Crossville, Tennessee, and Tom (Debra) Henderson of Burnsville, Minnesota; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved cats, Bucky and Emma.

Mikell was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Q.D. and Georgia Miskell; nephews, Dwayne Miskell and Ian Henderson; and sister-in-law, Cathy Henderson.

He honorably served our country in the United States Air Force, overseas during Vietnam.

Mikell briefly worked for IC Railroad before graduating from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was the janitor for First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale and provided janitorial services for the First Christian Church in Carbondale as well as the Carbondale Savings & Loan (Regions Bank) for many years. Mikell also owned and operated his own lawn mowing services.

He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Carbondale.

Mikell was a sports enthusiast. He loved to cheer on his beloved St. Louis Cardinals, LA Rams, and the SIU Salukis! Mikell and Elaine were season Saluki Basketball ticket holders for over 40 years.
