Mary Lynn Smith

Mary Lynn Smith, 87, of Carterville, passed away Saturday, January 2, 2021, at Shawnee Senior Living in Herrin.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2020, at Willowrest Cemetery in Carterville, with Minister William Brandstatter officiating. Covid restrictions will be enforced.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Mary was born January 24, 1933, in Sesser, to William “Todd” Loyd and Judith Ninetti (Silkwood) White. She married David “Bones” Levi Smith on August 14, 1954, in Corinth, Mississippi. He preceded her in death on January 5, 2017.

She is survived by her son, Jim (Kim) Smith of Carterville; daughters, Judy (Scott) Houston of Carterville and Diane (Jeff) Eaton of Romeoville, Illinois; grandchildren, Robert Houston of Carterville, Rebecca (Dan) Linares of Hampton, Virginia, Michael (Margaret) Eaton of Bismark, North Dakota, Clifford (Maura) Eaton of Tinley Park, Illinois, Jamie (Brett) Melvin of Branson, Missouri, and Jacob (Traci) Smith of Carterville; 18 great grandchildren; sister, Maureen Williams of Bellevue, Nebraska; brothers, Bob (Donna) White of Sesser, Bradley (Cristy) White of Aurora and Loyd (Karen) White of Sesser.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandsons, Sgt. Benjamin Smith, USMC, and Andrew Houston; and sisters, Mima Geisey and Judy Ann Laur; and brother, Bill White.

She was the Valedictorian of her high school class.

She was a bookkeeper for Spires Wholesale Company in Carbondale for over 40 years.

Mary was a member of the Church of Christ in Marion.

Her family was her greatest joy in life.
