Mary Elizabeth was born on June 12, 1945, in Cairo, Illinois, to parents Ben F. and Mary Harget and raised by grandparents, Arlie and Gladys Smith. Mary attended Carterville Schools graduating from Carterville High School in 1961. She was united in marriage to Floyd L. Smith on December 12, 1964, in Carterville. Together they shared nearly 58 years of marriage.
Floyd and Mary were blessed with a son, Richard Allen Smith on November 7th, 1967, in Herrin, Illinois.
Mary spent much of her early years as a caregiver for children in the Herrin area. She loved baking and taking her treats to others, sharing her baked goodies was truly her way of saying, “I Love You”.
She learned at an early age to be frugal and received much “joy” from finding just the right bargain!
Mary’s love for animals included many cats and dogs over the years. Her “grand-dog” Greta, had a very special place in her heart.
She leaves behind her husband, Floyd of Herrin; her son, Richard and spouse, Brett Ferrari of St. Louis; sisters, Myra Kay Wagley (Raymond) of Ferges, Linda Faye Kimmel (Jim) of Murphysboro, Leah Covey (Jim) of Marion, and Phyllis Antonini of Carbondale. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mary is preceded in her death along with her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and mother and father-in-law.
She was a member of the Jesus Only Church where she will be missed by friends, and the wonderful “Church Lady” cooks.
The family wishes to extend their deepest thanks to the staff and Doctors at Parkway Manor and Herrin Hospital.
