Marjorie Hicks Obituary

Marjorie Kay Hicks, 77, of Carterville, passed away Sunday, September 5, 2021, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville, with Pastor Daryl Varble officiating.

Memorial contributions can be made to Grand Avenue Baptist Church.

Marjorie was born March 26, 1944, in Carterville, to William Herman and Mary Frances (Clayton) McKenzie. She married Gary D. Hicks on May 25, 1963, in Carterville. He preceded her in death on July 29, 1996.

She is survived by her son, Gary D. (Clair) Hicks Jr. of Montgomery, Alabama; grandsons, Brandon Dale (Josie) Hicks of Troy, Alabama, and Blake Foster Hicks of Montgomery, Alabama; great-grandchildren, Britton, Barrett, Griffin, Ivey, and Sullivan Hicks; sister, Fayetta Robinson of Carterville; sister-in-law, Norma McKenzie of Carterville. Marjorie is also survived by many additional family including nieces and nephews, Jimmy McKenzie, Terry McKenzie, Iris Glover, and special niece, Patsy Arnold; dear friend, Rich Stevenson and his family; her beloved Grand Avenue Baptist Church Family; and a host of friends and neighbors.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Bill McKenzie;  sisters, Imogene Thomas and Velda Fozzard; and her precious “fur baby” Josie.

She worked a variety of jobs over the years: from food service at John A. Logan College; to retail sales at J.C. Penny; to caring for kids as a Nanny. Her favorite role was being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Marjorie was an active member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Carterville, where she faithfully attending Sunday School Class.  She had a very giving servant’s heart and loved to volunteer her time, serving her church family at their many events, whether it was helping in the kitchen or at the Pantry on Commodities Day. Marjorie truly saw the good in everyone and her everyday presence will be missed.
