Marie Charlotte Riley, 74, of Carterville and formerly of Effingham, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 1, 2024, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carterville, with Bill Harper officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 5, 2024, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery in Effingham.

Marie was born December 15, 1949, in Effingham, to Wayne E. and Margaret (Stephens) Riley.

She is survived by her brother, Stephen Riley; 6 housemates, David, Maxine, Barb, Lovelle, Tristan, and Chris, and the staff at Progress Management in Crainville.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Sharon Katherine Riley.

Marie has previously lived at the Marion Street-PMI, Skystar in DeSoto, Chestnut Manor in Herrin, and Mattingly Health Care Center in Energy.

Marie attended Progress Port in Carterville and was loved by the staff there. She enjoyed fidgeting with her cards and items that she could run between her fingers. She liked to rock in her chair and sing songs like “Amazing Grace” and “Proud Mary”. Marie also loved the van rides with staff because she got to listen to music on the radio. 

Marie enjoyed being the older sister and could be quite bossy with her brother. She didn’t speak many words, but would say, “alright Stephen”.
