She was born October 16, 1930, in Myrtle, Missouri, to Mary (Miller) Crabtree and Curtis Crabtree. She was the oldest of 12 children. In 1950, she married Paul Shelton and lived in and around Cairo, Illinois. She had 5 children, Ralph Shelton, Larry Shelton, David Shelton, Allen Shelton, and Sarah (Shelton) Summers.

Margie’s life was a difficult one, growing up very poor during the Great Depression. As a result, she learned to work hard, spend wisely and to do what was needed to care for family. Over the years, she was a waitress and cook in a Cairo restaurant, a seamstress, an upholsterer, and even a roofer! After her first marriage ended, she was married to Evan Braden in December of 1970. He was a roofer and worked all over Southern Illinois with Margie faithfully going along to help in the work. In 1970, they moved to Benton, Illinois, where she finished raising her family. In 1998, she moved to Carterville, Illinois, where she continued to work in upholstery and other handcrafted items.

Margie loved being outside and was an avid gardener and grower of all types of flowers.

She loved all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed seeing them whenever possible.

Margie was preceded in death by her husband, Evan; her sisters, Hazel, Della, and Carol; her brothers, Geoff, Dewey, Don, and Doyle; and one son, David Shelton.

She is survived by her sister, Lela Caswell; brothers, Dean, Jesse Dale and John Crabtree; children, Ralph Shelton, Larry Shelton, Allen Shelton, and Sarah (Alan) Summers; and daughter-in-law, Anna Shelton; grandchildren, Ed (Susan) Shelton, Kay (Shelton) Watson, Curt Shelton, Jennifer (Tracy) Pagud, Zane (Taylor) Smith, and Sydney Smith; great-grandchildren, Jaedyn Shelton, Aubree Shelton, Kyra Pagud, Mya Pagud, Andy (Marissa) Weaver, AnnaBelle Weaver (Aaron) Allen, Rivers Watson, Ryder Watson, and Courtney Shelton.
