Larry Reed Obituary

Larry Mitchell Reed, 86, of Carterville, passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Hillview Senior Living & Rehab in Vienna.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 15, 2026, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with the Rev. Ryan Tackett officiating. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home. 

Memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church of Carterville or to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Larry was born on March 7, 1939, in Kingsport, Tennessee, to Eleanor Josephine (Gott) and Fonzie Mitchell Reed. He married Sharon Kay Owen on May 28, 1961, in Tuscola. She preceded him in death on February 2, 2025.

He is survived by his sons, William (Kathy) Mitchell Reed, and Michael (Tally) Allen Reed; daughter, Katherine Sue Kane; grandchildren, Kelsey (Dustin) Russell, Alisha (Dakota) Reese, Mitchell (Brooke) Kane, Taylor Martin, Olivia (Michael) Reed, Grayson (Ploenpit) Reed, Fausha (Brad) Champley, Vanessa (Mike) Meinert, and Danielle (Bronson) Meyer; 17 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Larry Owen; plus several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brother, David Reed.

He honorably served in the Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Corporal with the 130th Infantry.

Larry began his career at General Telephone in Bloomington and later spent more than 30 years working for the Illinois Central Railroad and the Canadian National Railroad, retiring as a Supervisor of Communications.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting, was a member of the Crab Orchard Boat and Yacht Club, and loved traveling with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Larry also took great pride in cooking and grilling for his family.
