Larry Harris Obituary

Larry Don Harris, 77, of Carterville, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, March 25, 2018, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with his grandson, Pastor Max Harris, granddaughter, Grace Harris and Pastor Michael Williams officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m., Saturday, March 24, 2018, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois, 204 Halfway Road, Marion, IL 62959.

Larry was born on August 4, 1940, in Carterville, to Eugene “Gene” E. and Loretta M. (Wright) Harris. He married Barbara Jean Maze on November 26, 1959, in Carterville. Together they shared 58 wonderful years.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Harris of Carterville; children, Mike (Jenny) Harris of Carterville, Pat (Laura) Harris of Greenville, and Debbie (John) Steel of DeSoto, Missouri; grandchildren, Zoe Hawkins, Max Harris, Halle Harris, Grace Harris, Grant Harris, Paige Steel, Marina Steel, and Sidney Steel; great-grandchildren, Lyric and Remy Hawkins; brother, Ford “Hoopie” Harris of Carterville; sister, Cindy Harris (Ransom Daly) of Hillsdale, Michigan; sisters-in-law, Rhea Hasemeyer, Ida Bollinger, Ruby Tregoning and Imy (Roger “Pepe”) Swift; nieces, Elizabeth Tregoning English, Karen Fisher, Sharon Mitchell, Daria Lopez, Jerri Harris Painter, Wendy Harris, Andrea Harris Butler, and Marisa Riggs; nephews, Dr. Philip Tregoning, JP Swift, Alan Swift, Russell Harris, Rocky Harris, James Wesley Harris, and Ford “Wes” Harris.   

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Ford (Linnie) Harris and Cecil (Myrtle) Wright; brothers, Jerry (Cleo) Harris and James “Jim” Harris; and niece, Christinia Lynn Whitaker.  

He honorably served our country in the U.S. Army, serving overseas in Vietnam.

Larry began working as a plumber for his father, at E. Harris & Sons. He then worked for Wellers Plumbing Contractors for many years until they closed. He then started H & E Plumbing Contractors, working alongside his son, Mike.

He was a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Carterville.

Larry was a proud veteran who belonged to the Marion V.F.W. and Herrin American Legion.

He loved to golf and play cards at Crab Orchard Golf Course. Larry also liked to go fishing.

Larry also belonged to the Local #160 Plumbers & Pipefitters Union in Murphysboro. He shared is knowledge of plumbing as a guest teacher for apprentice classes.
