Johnny Floyd Summers, 85, of Goreville, formerly of Carterville, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M., Thursday, June 1, 2023, at Lone Oak Baptist Church in Energy, with Pastors David Dyer, Darren Clark, and Jerry Schell officiating. Burial with military rites will be in North Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Thursday, at the church.
Memorial contributions can be made to the family to offset traveling expenses.
Johnny was born on February 16, 1938, in Carbondale, to Bennie and Gladys Mae (Johnson) Summers. He married Anna Darlene Longbottom on June 5, 1963. She preceded him in death on March 7, 2010. He then married Patricia Susan Newton-Eddleman on May 21, 2011, in Goreville.
He is survived by his wife, Susie “Mama Susie”, of Goreville; daughters, Paula (Paul) Greenlee, Erica (Ed) Goeke, and Lynette Summers; son, Johnny Floyd Summers Jr.; grandchildren, Corey Scott Goeke, Sarah Beth Goeke, Edward Aaron Goeke, Dustin Blair Goeke, Kelli (Bruce) Lawrence, and Paul Dominic (Courtney) Greenlee; great grandchildren, Landon Goeke, Wyatt Brown, Kade Brown, Eddie Goeke, Elsie Lawrence, and Meredith Lawrence; sister, Debra (Paul) Brinker; and brother, Jackie Lloyd Summers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Darlene; grandson, Devin Miles Goeke; sisters, Pauline McGeath, Doris Summers, Florene Dosset, and Joyce Reed; and brother, Gene Summers.
Johnny was a member of the Lone Oak Baptist Church in Energy.
He honorably served our country in the United States Air Force as a Radio interceptor, operator in Tripoli, Lybia, Crete, and Turkey.
Johnny was a concrete finisher for Jim Cecil Construction. He also was a bus driver for Carterville Schools for over 17 years. His greatest role was that of being a Pastor to numerous communities including- New Castle, Carrier Mills, Hafer, Christopher, and Murphysboro. His carpentry skills came in handy when volunteering for Carpenters for Christ- a mission that helped build 17 Churches over the years.
He was an avid crappie fisherman and gardener, but his family was the most important thing in his life.
