John L. Stout, 89, of Carterville, died Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Manor Court in Carbondale, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville with the Rev. Tom Stearns officiating. The burial will be in North Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be held after 6:00 P.M., Friday at the funeral home in Carterville.
Memorial contributions can be made to Alzheimer’s Association. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
John was born on February 25, 1936, in Steele, Missouri, to Arlie Efram and Ida Ethel (McBride) Stout. He married Delores Fern Smith on June 15, 1957, in Marion as they shared 67 years together.
He is survived by his loving wife Fern; five children, John B. (Brenda) Stout, Arlie Stout, Allean Meachum, Carla (Jim) Hensgen and Carl (Pam) Stout; twenty grandchildren; forty-five great grandchildren; and eleven great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Pat Layne, Fay Wenzel, and Mae Cable; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Billie D., Jerry D., and Rae Stout; sisters, Peggy Sue Edwards and Shelby Rand; step grandson, Eric Hensgen; two great grandchildren, Henry Cox and Kyler Bayless.
John worked at Wise Boat Factory in Arkansas, then Chicago Raw Hide. He was a truck driver for Carbondale Concrete and worked as a groundskeeper at Crab Orchard Golf Course.
John loved being outdoors, going fishing, hunting and horse trading.
