John Shelby

John Alfred Shelby, 64, of Carterville, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2025.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 29, 2025, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home, in Carterville, with the Rev. Ralph Brandon officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

John was born on September 5, 1961, in Carbondale, to Tolliver Roosevelt and Mary Alberta (Lewis) Shelby. He married Darla Bernice Mitchell on March 20, 1982, in Carterville.

He is survived by his wife, Darla Shelby; brothers, David (Linda) Carney, and Robert (Myra) Shelby; his beloved dog, Rascal; plus several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Tyle Shelby; and sister, Melinda Davis.

He was a self-employed carpenter who took pride in his work. John loved the outdoors, especially fishing, and cherished time spent with his family and friends.
