John Richardson Obituary

John David “J.D” Richardson, 82, of Hurst, passed away Friday, March 17, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Military rights will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First Christian Church of Hurst or to the Hurst Fire Department.

J.D. was born October 9, 1940, in Pontiac, Illinois, to Lyle Stewart and Norma Jean (Stringer) Richardson. After the death of his father, Lyle, Norma later married Maurice Benckendorf who was a devoted father to J.D. and his brothers and sister, Jan. J.D. married Katherine L. Lind on April 12, 1957, in Ottawa, Illinois.

J.D. is survived by his wife of 66 years, Katy Richardson of Hurst; his 5 children, John Richardson, Jay Richardson, Coleen (Randy) Schlappi, Jesse (Kathy) Richardson, and Norma (Paul) Miller; grandchildren, Jeanna Schlappi, Josh Richardson, Amanda (Othon) Martinez, Tara (Kenny) Crawford, Sunshine Richardson, Kyle Miller, Joe (Kelsey) Richardson, Tiffany (Dylan) Ward, Jared Richardson, Heather (Gery) Thorne, Stephen Richardson, Stephanie Richardson, Jason Richardson, Matt Richardson, Ginny (Garrett) Drew, and Sarah Richardson; 35 great-grandchildren; and 1 great great-granddaughter; and sister, Jan Kennedy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle Richardson, Maurice and Norma Jean Benckendorf; and brothers, Donnie, Ronnie, and Lyle Richardson.

J.D. honorably served in the United States Navy from 1957-1977, then the Fleet Reserves from 1977-1987. He later worked as a machinist for Brazell shipyards and then returned to Illinois and worked at Burns Machine Shop in Ottawa and retired from Vales Industries in Pontiac.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Hurst.

J.D. was a lifetime member of the American Legion and V.F.W.

He loved fishing, boating with his family, NASCAR racing, and working in his yard. J.D.’s true passion was spending time with his grandkids.

J.D. was a great and loving man who was always so much fun to be around. He will be dearly missed.
