Joan Marie (Sasseen) Honey, 88, of Marion, Illinois, formerly of Carterville, Illinois, passed away at home, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
She was born a Valentine’s Day baby on February 14, 1936, in Charleston, Missouri, to Dewey and Lillian Marie (Moore) Sasseen. She married Paul Dean Honey on May 18, 1968, in Cairo, Illinois. He preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Anthony Fleege, of Carterville, and granddaughters, Madison and Megan Fleege, of Carterville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Kent Honey; grandson, Christopher Honey; and her older twin brothers, Edwin and Edward Sasseen.
Joan and Paul met in Cairo, Illinois, where they both began their banking careers. They later moved to Carterville where they both worked at Carterville State and Savings Bank for many years. Joan then became a stay-at-home mom, volunteering at school events and as the classroom room mother. As a second career, Joan was an avid crafter, specializing in her floral arrangements, wreaths, and crocheted afghans, of which she sold at the Crainville Baptist Church’s annual craft fair, where she was a long-time member. Upon Paul’s retirement from banking, she took up her banking career again at First Federal Savings and Loan, working at both the Carterville and Herrin branches as a teller. After many years of service and many bank name changes, she retired to her best career ever, babysitting her granddaughters, the joys of her life. She was their “MawMaw” and second mother. She delighted in her granddaughters’ hugs and kisses, singing and reading with them alongside “PawPaw,” and cheering them on at their sporting events and achievements. Nothing could make her smile more than a call or a visit from her grandbabies, even when they were no longer babies anymore.
Riggin-Pillatsch and Burke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. As per Joan’s and the family’s wishes, she was cremated and will have a memorial service at a later date.
