Jimmy Dean “J.D.” Smith, 55, of Marion, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2021, at Heartland Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 20, 2021, at Riggin-Pillatsch and Burke Funeral Home, with Pastor Jason McKinnies officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will begin after 5:00 p.m., Friday, March 19, 2021, at the funeral home. COVID-19 restrictions apply and facial coverings must be worn.
J.D. was born August 21, 1965, in Carbondale, to William and Ruth (Stone) McNeil. He married Tammy Collins on August 18, 1984, in Kankakee, Illinois. Together they shared 36 wonderful years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Tammy Smith of Marion; sons, Sean Anthony (Jesica) Smith of Carterville, Derick (Megan Ashley) Smith of San Diego, California, Zachery (Megan Irene) Smith of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Travis (Kelly McKnight) Smith of Lake Worth, Florida; grandsons, Parker Smith, Zane Smith, and Bryant Smith; sister, Bernadine (Dean) Vaughn; brothers, Steve (Carolyn) Smith of Herrin, Jeff (Susan) Heesch of Carterville, Kenny (Lisa) Stone of Herrin, Don (Janet) Smith of Herrin, Paul (Glennda) Smith of Marion; and a host of friends.
J.D. was preceded in death by his parents; half-sister, Susan; and brother, Ray “Bugs” Smith.
He was a truck driver for over 30 years. The last 10 years J.D. was a driver for Republic Services in Marion, where his co-workers fondly called him, “Buffett”.
J.D. was an outdoorsman who enjoyed deer hunting. He was also an avid sports fan who loved to cheer on his beloved Cubs, Dallas Cowboys, Illini basketball and Ohio State football.
J.D. was also known to be extremely generous and would do anything for anyone.
