Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 16, 2021, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Dwayne Fields officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Jewell was born April 11, 1922, in Herrin, to Norman and Ethel Elvira Ann (Purdy) Campbell. She married Harold R. Norton on May 30, 1943, in University City, Missouri. He preceded her in death on December 30, 2014. Together they shared 71 wonderful years.
Jewell is survived by her daughters, Connie (Jan) Christy and Brenda (John) Winings, all of Carterville; sons, Paul Norton and David Norton, both of Carterville; son-in-law, Jerry White of Cambria; grandchildren, Steven (Kristen) Norton of Ledbetter, Kentucky, Jeanna (Jason) Killman of Carterville, Monica Norton of Herrin, Mark Winings of Carterville, Jeremy Winings of Fairview Heights, Cara (Patrick) Bryan of Wildwood, Missouri, and Tammy (Shawn) Horn of Carterville; great-grandchildren, Calen Norton, Madelyn Norton, Keirsten Killman, Gavin Tuggle, Kaitlyn Tuggle, Colton Winings, Eva Bryan, Maya Bryan, Ella Horn, and Addy Horn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Debbie White; granddaughter, Amy Norton; and sister, Helen Ivy.
Jewell was a very accomplished cook and homemaker. As a young adult, she wrote Braille for the blind, also worked in retail sales and at the Tiny Tot Shop.
Jewell was a member of the Blue Heron Marina and enjoyed spending numerous hours crappie fishing from the boat and dock. At 99 years of age, she was the oldest dues-paying shareholder in the Blue Heron Marina and Campground.
She and Harold were season ticket holders of Saluki basketball games.
She spent a lot of times playing board games and cards with her children and was very competitive at playing Scrabble with her friends.
She was a very active member at Crainville Baptist Church, where she assisted Harold in his treasurer position for over 38 years. She also served as a Sunday School teacher. Jewell was a devout Christian woman who cherished her family and friends dearly.
