Wilma Jean Claunch, 91, of New Athens and formerly of Carterville, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Mar-Ka Nursing Home in Mascoutah, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Dr. Robert Koch officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 301 S. Market Street, New Athens. Visitation will also be held from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.

Jean was born on March 2, 1933, in Carterville, to Carl “Maters” and Ruby (Emery) Poteete. She married Jackie Miles Claunch on August 5, 1955, in Crainville, Illinois. He preceded her in death on March 4, 2000.
She is survived by her daughter, Denise (Steve) Lauer; sons, Dennis Claunch (Chris Cavanaugh), Darryl (Ashley) Claunch; grandchildren, Tim (Megan) Martin, Grace Lauer, Carson Lauer, Wyatt Robertson, and Jack Claunch; great grandchild, Jace Martin; sister, Joyce Carney; brother, Don Poteete.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Carol Dean “Crack” (Ruth Ann) Poteete; sister, June (Dale) Horsley; In-Laws, Miles and Katie Claunch.
She worked at Siemens Manufacturing and Mallinkrodt in New Athens for many years. Jean had also been a C.N.A.
She was a member of the St. John’s United Church of Christ in New Athens.
Jean enjoyed shopping, bowling, playing bingo, and cheering on her Cardinals. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
