Jane Elspeth (Schmid) Charles

Jane Elspeth Charles of Creal Springs, Illinois, born May 4, 1934, in Springfield Illinois, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Integrity Nursing Home in Marion, Illinois.

Jane received degrees from Western Illinois University and Southern Illinois University.  She was a teacher and guidance counselor for many years in the Carbondale schools.  After retirement, Jane volunteered her services as a guidance counselor for the Goreville school system. 

She was a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Marion, where she served as a teacher, board member, choir member and elder. 

Jane was a loving wife and mother.  For many years she enjoyed spending her summers at the family cabin on Lake of The Woods with her husband and family.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Statira Schmid; her brother, Albert Schmid; and grandson, Dylan Charles.

Surviving are her husband of 70 years, Edward Charles; sons, David (Jackie) Charles of Carbondale, Albert (Robyn) Charles of Pinckney, Michigan, and Frank Charles of Energy; daughter, Delores Charles of Creal Springs; 8 grandkids; 12 great-grandkids; and brother, Charles (Janet) Schmid of Chatham, Illinois.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Rev. David Estep officiating.
