James “Jim” Franklin Hampton, 84, of Carterville, passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at Herrin Hospital, surrounded by his family. He led a life marked by service, accomplishment, and love.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Pastor Chad Flannery officiating. Burial with military rites by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.

Jim was born June 1, 1940, in Carbondale, to James Franklin and Wilma Lucille (Ashoff) Hampton. He married Carol A. North on January 5, 2006, in Leesburg, Florida.
He served his country honorably for 31 years in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves, retiring at the rank of Captain. His commitment to service defined his career, where he led with both integrity and dedication. Following his distinguished military service, he applied his skills and passion for innovation as an electrical engineer at Illinois Power in Clinton, IL for 18 years. His academic achievements included a Bachelor of Arts in Physics from Auburn University and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois.
Beyond his professional life, Jim, was a man of faith and community, a member of Grand Avenue Baptist Church. He cherished time spent with his family, and his favorite pastimes included solving crossword puzzles and traveling, especially with his loved ones by his side.
He is survived by his wife, Carol A. North-Hampton; daughter, Mary Lynne Hampton; sons, James Michael Hampton, and John (Alicia) Hampton; grandchildren, Andrew (Emma) Hampton, Emily (Lewis) Matthias, Molly Hampton, Claire Hampton, and Grace Hampton; great-grandson, Graham Matthias; great-granddaughter arriving in April; brother, Tom (Karen) Hampton; niece, Jamie (Robert) Wright; nephew, Ethan (Cara) Hampton; many great nieces and nephews; and many friends.
