JR Fletcher

JR Fletcher, 96, of Johnston City, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Herrin Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 5, 2024, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Dr. Randy Carney officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Thompsonville. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

JR was born on August 23, 1927, in Thompsonville, to Jamed Edmond and Mary Dorothy (Serles) Fletcher. He married Doris J. Talkington on July 14, 1950, in Harco, Illinois. She preceded him in death on December 13, 2017.

He is survived by his daughters, Sheila (Clyde) Trout, and Debbie Gillis; son, Denny Fletcher; grandchildren, Jay (Hannah) Tirey, Teresa (Andrew) Hovenga, Sara (Justin) Kirby, and Kellie (Chad) Paul; great-grandchildren, Harvey James Tirey, Braxton Hovenga, Eden Hovenga, Emma Kirby, Nora Paul, and Levi Paul; sister-in-law, Margie Fletcher; plus several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

JR was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant sister, Alice; sisters, Hazel Deering, Edna Fann, and Ellen Trusty; and brothers, Gussie, Jack, and Donald Fletcher.

He had worked at American Bridge Company, a steel mill, in Gary, Indiana for fourteen years. JR was also a grain farmer who also raised cattle and pigs.

JR attended the JCity Church in Johnston City and was also a very active Mason who belonged to the Aikin Masonic Lodge.
