Fred Joseph Shadowen Jr., 76, of Elkville, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 12, 2024, with Rev. Ryan Tackett officiating. Burial will be in Elkville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.

Fred was born June 22, 1947, in Marion, to Fred Joseph and Nadine (Ridgway) Shadowen Sr. He married Ethel Mae Cantrell on July 4, 2011, at their home in Elkville.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel Shadowen of Elkville; mother, Nadine Shadowen of Elkville; daughters, Francine (Jay) Helton of Cape Girardeau, Carolyn (Bobby) Gant of Elkville, and Natalie Romero of New Braunfels, Texas; grandchildren, Christopher Farris, Abigail Farris, Jericka Helton, Zoe Gant, and Bobby Gant Jr.; granddogs, Jake and Baxter; step-sons, Roger Gibson of Elkville, David Gibson of Carbondale, Robert Gibson of West Frankfort, and Jeffery Gibson of Carbondale; numerous additional family of aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his beloved dogs, Annie and Lucy.
Fred was preceded in death by his father.
He served as a volunteer firefighter for the Elkville Fire Department for over 10 years. Fred was an incredibly talented painter and was a trained instructor for Bob Ross Painting. In addition, Fred worked for the family business, General Woodworking Sawmill for many years.
Fred enjoyed fishing and gardening. He made the best home-made pickles!
He loved spending time with family and friends, especially those famous 4th of July celebrations!
