Frank Edward Gunderson, 88, of Carterville, peacefully passed away in his sleep on March 10, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Frank was born on August 6, 1935, in Waterman, Illinois, to Byron and Ester (Garland) Gunderson. He graduated from Leland High School in 1953, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Illinois University in 1965. He was also awarded a Master of Arts in French degree from Illinois State University in 1967. He taught French at the high school and university levels for twenty-five years before working in private business for more than twenty years.
He married Donna Laurel Groth on July 27, 1963, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Together they shared 60 wonderful years.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Gunderson; children, Henry and Hattie, who live in Southern Illinois; grandchildren, Cheyenne, Madison, Hannah and Garret Holder; brother, James (Donna) Gunderson and their daughter, Heather, who live in Edgar, Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A man of many passions, Frank loved his family, reading, art, jazz, and horses. His enduring wit and kindness will be missed by his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
