CARTERVILLE — Mr. Floyd “Butch” Waggoner, 72, passed away peacefully, Monday, Dec. 9, 2019, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Butch was born in Elizabethtown, on Aug 11, 1947 to Abner and Robbie Waggoner. He married Roberta “Bobbie” Lynn Van Niman of Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Aug. 18, 1973, in First United Methodist Church in Carbondale.
He attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale where he earned a BA in Geology and a Masters in Geography. He was the first person in his family to go to college. He taught for over 34 years in Carbondale at Lincoln Jr. High School as a math and science teacher. Butch had two children, Matthew (Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force retired) and Kimberly Anne (Houston, Texas).
An active member of the community, Butch was the 2018 Chamber of Commerce Frank R. Samuel Jr. Community Service Award recipient, as well as the Carterville Rotarian of the Year. He was an president of the library board, and could always be seen volunteering at other local charities. Most of his volunteer work was done quietly so we may never truly know the full impact of his work.
He is preceded in death by his wife “Bobbie”, parents, and brothers Russell and Nelson.
Butch is survived by his children, Matthew and his wife, Christine, of Springfield, Virginia and Kimberly Anne Zeller and her husband, Adam, of Houston, Texas; and three adoring grandsons, Logan Waggoner, Benjamin Zeller, and Zachary Zeller; niece, Monica and Lance Barnes of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; and numerous cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 14, 2019, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Pastor Larry Gilbert officiating. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m., Friday, December 13, 2019, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Willowrest Cemetery in Carterville.
Butch was very active in the community. In lieu of flowers, memorials will accepted and given to his favorite community charities: Gum Drops, Anne West Lindsey District Library, or to the Carterville Pantry. Additionally, the family will be establishing a scholarship in his name a John A Logan College.
