Floyd Smith Obituary

Floyd Lee Smith, 80, of Herrin, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Parkway Manor in Marion, surrounded by loved ones.

He was born on August 24, 1944, in Herrin, to Ezra Clinton and Mary (Darnell) Smith.  Floyd married Mary Elizabeth Harget on December 12, 1964, in Cambria. She preceded him in death on October 6, 2022.

Floyd spent 19 years working as a coal miner at Old Ben 25 and Zeigler Coal. He later served his community through his work for the City of Herrin at the waste treatment plant and maintenance of Herrin City Cemetery. Floyd was a proud member of the United Mine Works of America, Laborers Local 703, and the Herrin Eagles, where he made lifelong friendships.

An avid outdoorsman, Floyd found joy in the simplicity and beauty of nature. He loved deer hunting, fishing, and spending time in the great outdoors. Known for his love of haggling and negotiating, Floyd has a knack for striking a deal and always enjoyed the thrill of the bargain. His deep love for animals was evident to all who knew him, and he took pride in caring for the creatures that enriched his life.

He is survived by his son, Richard Smith (Brett Ferrari); nephew, Mike Hale.

Sincere gratitude to dear friend, Sue Bresett; special cousins, Sonya Garver and Betsy Dietz.  A very special thanks to Brett for many years of care to both Floyd and Mary.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sister, Ethel Hale; and granddogs, Greta, Otis, and Buford.
