Elizabeth, fondly known as “Liz,” was born on September 28, 1935, in Herrin, to Nora Hazel (Cantrell) Rogers and James Henry “Red” Rogers. Liz attended Herrin High School and married Virgil Paul Hunt on May 31, 1952. He preceded her in death on December 5, 2013.
Liz was employed by Smoler Brothers Dress Factory in Herrin for over 40 years before retiring. She was a member of Herrin First Christian Church, and more recently First Baptist Church in Carterville. She was a long time volunteer at the Herrin Pantry, where she and Virgil served faithfully. Liz also had a personal ministry of sending cards and notes to those in need, a testament to her compassionate and caring spirit.
Liz was known as “Granny” to her family and loved the time she spent with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Many precious family traditions were created over the years that Liz’s family will cherish forever. Some of those memories include: picking out a white-flocked tree at Wiswell’s Christmas Tree Farm, going on family shopping trips, seeing a family movie the Saturday after Thanksgiving, making peanut butter fudge and reading Luke, Chapter 2 from the Bible before opening presents on Christmas Eve.
Above all else, Liz made it her mission to instill in her family the importance of having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Her servant’s heart was obvious by her good works. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her kindness, generosity, and devotion to others will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Donna (Steve) Norris of Waltonville; son-in-law, Bruce Childers of Carterville; grandchildren, Mallory (Andrew) Martin, Ashley (Travis) Paddock, Lindsay (Chris) Harvey, and Wesley (Trish) Norris; great-grandchildren, Jace and Jaxe Paddock, Alivia and Toby Harvey, and Josie, Cavitt and Camden Martin; sister-in-law, June Barnes of Tustin, California; and nephews, David Barnes and family of Long Beach, California, and Greg Barnes and family of Dallas, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter, Margaret Childers.
