Ike Eigenrauch: 1937 - 2024
Edward 'Ike' Eigenrauch, age 87, of Carterville, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale surrounded by family. Born to Ben and Emilie Eigenrauch on February 20, 1937, in Irvington, Illinois, Ike's life was a testament to hard work, resilience, and dedication.
From his humble beginnings, he built not only a successful business but also a legacy of deep-rooted connections with family, friends, and the southern Illinois community. As the founder of Ike Family Dealerships, Ike made Carbondale his home in 1976, leaving a mark on everyone who knew him.
After serving his country in the U.S. Air Force, Ike embarked on a remarkable journey in the automotive industry, building a business that has stood as a beacon of quality and service in Southern Illinois. From the very first car he sold to the successful multi-franchise dealership he leaves behind today; Ike built his career on one simple philosophy: always take care of the customer.
In 2013, Ike officially retired, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and dedication that continues to guide the business. The following year, he was recognized by the Marion Chamber of Commerce with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Ike wasn’t just a businessman; he was a community leader and a devoted family man. For over 50 years, he gave back to the people of Southern Illinois, supporting youth sports, donating to countless local non-profits, and being a proud member of the Saluki Wheel Club. His generosity and commitment to building a better future were evident in everything he did, whether it was mentoring young athletes or working tirelessly to bring new businesses to the region.
During high school, Ike was a member of the Centralia Orphans basketball team which was one of the winningest basketball programs in Illinois history. Though he joked that he spent more time cheering on his teammates from the bench than he did playing, Ike's contributions were far from unnoticed. At one point, he even held the school record for free-throw shooting. In addition to basketball, Ike shined as a standout baseball player, showcasing his all-around athletic talent.
Later in life, Ike excelled in men's fastpitch softball as a pitcher and designated hitter. During his final season in 1989, the “Ike's” team placed 5th in the ASA National Tournament, where Ike was honored as MVP and earned a spot on the National All-Tournament team with an impressive 16 hits, 6 home runs, and 27 RBIs in just 32 at-bats. His team's legacy was eventually cemented with their induction into the ASA National Hall of Fame.
Also a dedicated golfer, Ike even had the chance to participate in a PGA Pro-Am tournament alongside the legendary Jack Nicklaus, also known as "The Golden Bear.” Ike was also a devoted fan of St. Louis baseball, proudly cheering on his beloved Cardinals through eleven World Series Championship victories.
Family was always at the center of Ike's life and work. His children—Lori, Brian, and Jason—grew up by his side at the dealership, and today, alongside his granddaughter Ashlee, they continue to carry forward his legacy, ensuring Ike’s dream of a family-owned business remains alive.
To his loved ones, Ike was a pillar of strength and a constant source of love. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him immense joy, and he treasured every moment spent with his family. Ike could always be found at the racetrack, the gym, the ballfield, or watching gymnastics. Nothing excited him more than seeing his grandkids and great grandkids succeed, and each of them carries on Ike's legacy in their own unique way.
Ike leaves behind many loved ones including his three children: Lori (Guy) Sisulak, Brian (Amy) Eigenrauch, and Jason (Hilary) Eigenrauch. Grandchildren: Ashlee (Nate) Church, Callie (Johnathon) James, Brockton (Haley) Miller, Brody Eigenrauch, Madison Eigenrauch, Regan Eigenrauch, and Ryder Eigenrauch. Great-Grandchildren: Kinley, Gunnar, and Lincoln James. Sisters: Ruth (Ralph) Owens, Marie Ann Maytum, and Sharon (Jim) Elledge.
