Edward Valgene “Gene” Russell, 77, of Carterville, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2025, at the CLC at the Marion VA.
Graveside services with military rites will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 30, 2025, at Blairsville Cemetery, with his son, Pastor Ryan Russell officiating.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Carterville Fire Department or the Activities Department at the CLC at the Marion VA.
Gene Russell was born on April 1, 1948, in Herrin, Illinois, to Valjean Surratt and Wilda Modell (Simonds) Russell. On December 12, 1981, he married Sherri Layne Barnett in Carterville. Together, they shared 43 years of love and partnership.
Gene is survived by his wife, Sherri Russell; his children, Krissie Russell, Ryan (Rachael) Russell, and Katy Russell; and his cherished grandchildren, Cole and Mia Paraison, Ezra Judah, Shoshana, Malachi, and Samuel Russell. He is also survived by his siblings, Barb Schmid, Judy Bowen, and Mike (Vicki) Russell; sisters-in-law, Sandy (Jim) Cooper and Janine Russell; brother-in-law, Stan Barnett; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Val and Modell Russell; his brother, Milt Russell; and his sisters, Georgia Lynn and Deborah Sue.
Gene honorably served his country in the United States Air Force, traveling to more than 30 countries during his tour of duty.
A proud graduate of Loyola University in Chicago, Gene earned his degree with a concentration in finance and accounting. His love of numbers and problem-solving led to a successful career in banking, which spanned more than 50 years.
In his free time, Gene enjoyed boating, fishing, and watching professional golf. His quiet wisdom, steady presence, and deep love for his family will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
