Eddie Ray Nelson

Eddie Ray Nelson, 83, of Carterville, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2020, at Jefferson Barracks VA in St. Louis.

Memorial services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, October 30, 2020, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Pastor Danny Greer officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. COVID-19 restrictions apply.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Activities Department at the Marion VA Nursing Center.

Eddie was born on August 10, 1937, to Walter and Pauline (Drake) Nelson. He married Barbara Ann Baxter in Carbondale on April 8, 1959. She preceded him in death on March 8, 2020.

He is survived by his son, Wade (Lisa) Nelson of Makanda; grandchildren, Ashley Hess of Herrin, Ferrol Hess of Carterville, Joshawa (Michelle) Hess of Carterville, Wyatt Nelson of Makanda, Brittany (Dallas) Hunter of Auburn, Brandee Beltz of Herrin, and Brandon Beltz of Makanda; great-grandchildren, Dalton Hess, Gabriel Hess, Haidyn Clover, London Shadowens, Logan Fortner, J.J. Beltz, Neko Allen, Nova Hunter, Kora Hunter, Lola Hunter; brother, John (Heather) Nelson of Okawville; special nephew, Brett Baxter of Carterville; son-in-law, Randy Hess.

Eddie was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and daughter, Angela Hess.

He was a yard master for the Illinois Central Railroad for 32 years.

Eddie was an avid fisherman who also enjoyed camping and spending time with his family.
