Earl Edward Fries, 82, of Herrin, passed away Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Herrin Hospital.
Services will be held at a later date.
Earl was born February 13, 1941, in West Frankfort, to William Edward and Mary Lena (Soulsby) Fries. He married Lena May Kirkpatrick in June of 1981, in West Frankfort.
He is survived by his wife, Lena Fries; children, Melanie (Jerry) Priest, Steve Newsome, Dar Sherman, and Debra (Keith) Cooper; many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; several great great-grandchildren; brother, Larry Fries; and sister, Janet (Tim) Story; and an aunt, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, and children, Dawn Fries, Philip Fries, and Dave Newsome.
He honorably served our country in the United States Navy.
Earl was a guard with the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Elgin, Texas, Marion, Illinois, and Springfield, Missouri, for over 20 years, retiring as the Director of the Athletic Department.
He was a member of the West Frankfort V.F.W. and the Orient American Legion Post.
Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville assisted the family with cremation services.
