Donald L. Black, 95, of Carterville, passed away Monday, March 3, 2025, at Parkway Manor in Marion, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 7, 2025, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Rev. Ryan Tackett officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.
Memorials can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to Veteran’s Honor Wreaths.
Don was born on July 22, 1929, in Carterville, to James Leslie and Velma (Burrell) Black. He married Alice C. Fogle on April 28, 1951, in Piggott, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on July 28, 2017.
He is survived by his son, Les (Nancy) Black; daughters, Kim (Dennis) Spencer, and Marianne (Steve) Cowan; grandchildren, Austin (Steven Mattli) Black, Jill Minor, Lindsay (Joe Chotner) Rawls, Jennifer Bonner, Crystal (Azhar) Ulhaq, Denise (Nathan) Ridgway, Lisa (Justin) Vannoy, Laura (Dustin) Haltom, Chris (Erica) Cowan, and Tierney (Kelly) Cole; great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Katie, Larry, Nile, Noah, Niah, Hunter, Alec, Timothy, Ainsley, Colbie, Macie, Eli, Logan, Preslie, Harlyn, and Easton; great great-grandchildren, Lynnon and Isla.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alice; brothers, James L. Black and Roland “Wokie” Black.
Don was a 1947 graduate of Carterville High School. He honorably served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War.
Don had a long and dedicated career, including serving as a Southern Illinoisan Route Supervisor for over 10 years. Prior to that, he worked for over 30 years at Selmier-Peerless in Carbondale. His work ethic and commitment to his community were reflected in everything he did.
In addition to his professional achievements, Don was passionate about giving back to others. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels, providing support to those in need. His love for the outdoors was evident in the way he enjoyed spending time at Crab Orchard Refuge, often taking daily drives through the area. Don also cherished camping and boating with friends and family, making memories in the great outdoors.
Don will be remembered for his dedication, kindness, and love for life. His legacy of service, both to his country and community, will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
