Darrell N. Spiller, 67, of Energy, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 9, 2023, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Jesse McPherson officiating. Burial will be in Blairsville Cemetery. Masonic Rites will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, January 8, 2023, at the funeral home. Visitation will immediately follow. The family asked in remembrance of Darrell that you dress casually and wear your favorite car or Harley-Davidson shirt. A celebration of life will be held at the Herrin Elks immediately following the committal service at the cemetery.
Darrell was born August 2, 1955, in Carbondale, to Charles D. and Edna L. (Taitt) Spiller. He married Judy K. McPherson on August 18, 1973, in Herrin.
Darrell is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Judy Spiller of Energy; daughters, Lanie (Chad) Barbee of Louisville, Shelley Spruell of Herrin, and Dara (Jon) Dye of Herrin; grandchildren, Zachary Spruell of Herrin, Ananiah Barbee of Louisville, Adriana Spruell of Herrin, Isabella Barbee of Louisville, and Whitley Dye of Herrin; brothers, Gene (Chris) Spiller of Colp, Lowell (Sue) Spiller of Herrin, and Brian Spiller of Herrin; sisters, Kathy (Steve) Watson of Herrin, Allison (Jim) Peacock of Goreville, and Amy (Bob) Brothers of Crainville; brothers-in-law, Joel (Erma) McPherson of Amarillo, Texas, Jesse McPherson of Herrin, Neal McPherson of Herrin, and Frank McPherson of Houston, Texas; many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends; and his beloved dog, Willmo.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Joel and Leona McPherson; and sisters-in-law, Victoria McPherson and Nora McPherson.
Darrell worked as a coal miner for Will Scarlett Mine in Stonefort from 1974-1987. Darrell was also a member of the Plumber & Pipefitter Local #551 in West Frankfort for over 28 years, as well as a member of the Herrin Prairie Masonic Lodge #693 and Herrin Elks.
Darrell’s first love was his family, especially his five wonderful grandchildren. He was a car enthusiast who enjoyed racing and rooting for #3-Dale Earnhardt. Darrell also enjoyed riding his Harley. He had a passion for rebuilding old cars including his ’55 Chevy and “rat rod”. Darrell enjoyed traveling to different places to buy antique cars that he would then rebuild and sell at swap meets.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
