Clifta Jean (Hammonds) Stearns

Clifta Jean Stearns, 68, of Johnston City, formerly of Cambria, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Integrity Healthcare in Carbondale.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 24, 2020, at Oakwood Cemetery in Carterville, with Rev. R.H. Chitwood officiating. COVID restrictions apply.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Clifta was born August 14, 1952, in Carbondale, to Clifton and Sue (Tripp) Hammonds.

She is survived by her granddaughters, Courtney (Marcus) Garner of Johnston City and Autumn Stearns of Herrin; mother, Sue Barwick of Cambria; sisters, Wilma Dean (Kenny) Holder of Cambria and Leslie (Jim) Aaron Cambria; brothers, Randall (Donna) Hammonds of Cambria, Chris (Vicki) Hammonds of Benton, Kelly Hammonds and Mike Hammonds, both of Cambria; great-grandchildren, Cory Garner, Parker Garner and Lauralin Fleming; and many nieces and nephews.

Clifta was preceded in death by her father; son, Cory Stearns; niece, Kristin Miller; and step-father, "Papa" Chuck Barwick.

She retired with over 15 years of service from the State of Illinois' Department of Children and Family Services.

Clifta was a member of Southern Illinois Worship Center.

She enjoyed reading, crocheting and scrap-booking.
