Charles “Charlie” L. Barnes, 77, of Carterville, passed away Monday, June 21, 2021, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 25, 2021, at Crainville Baptist Church, with Pastors Cody Knapik and Michael Williams. Burial with military rites will be at Willowrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will begin after 5:00 p.m., Thursday, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville.

Charlie was born February 25, 1944, in Herrin, to William Everett and Pauline (Jackson) Barnes. He married Sharon Jacobson on September 16, 1967, in Herrin.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sharon Barnes of Carterville; children, Shawn (Melinda) Barnes of St. Louis, Bonnie (Kevin) Howerton of Carterville, and Donna (Adam) Compton of Carterville; grandchildren, Brennan and Cameron Barnes, Ruby Madison, Delaney, and Charlie Howerton, and Kenadi and Kash Compton; sister, Anna Faye Biggs of Herrin; sister-in-law, Betty Cox of Kerr, Texas; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of dear friends.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Everett Ray and David Franklin Barnes; and sisters, Paula Collins and Edna Bailey.
He honorably served our country in the United States Army during Vietnam.
Charlie was a plant manager at Allen Industries, as well as Intier Automotive and Magna International.
He was a faithful member of Crainville Baptist Church and the Carterville American Legion Post #347. He belonged to the Crab Orchard Golf Club where he was a member of the “11 O’clock Group” and worked in the Pro Shop for many years.
