Charles Roy Harris, 85, of Makanda, passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at the VA Medical Center in Marion.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 15, 2023, at Gentry Cemetery in Makanda, with Pastors Tommy Monroe and John Howard officiating. Military rites will be accorded by Scott Air Force Base Honor Guard and the Carterville American Legion Post and Herrin V.F.W. and American Legion Post.

Charles was born October 26, 1937, in Carbondale, to Oscar and Sylvia (Laffoon) Harris. He married Ruby Caroline Wolf on January 4, 1958, in Miami, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on April 12, 2023.
He is survived by his daughter, Verdonna “Sis” (John) Otey; grandchildren, Heather Ramsey (Dillion) Key, Jessica (Jeff) Block, Amy (Tyler) Cope, Briana (Oussama) Badad, and Warren (Emilee) Otey; great-grandchildren, Blade Lada, Nicholas Baggett, Wyatt Rowan, Autumn Rowan, Grayson Cope, Gabe Otey, Brylee Otey, and Peyton Otey; brothers, Jim (Pat) Harris, and Vic Tiller; sisters, May Dash, and Joyce (Clyde) Cox; daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Harris; and several nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife; step-father, George Tiller; son, Charles “Chuck” E. Harris; brothers, Jack and Jerry Harris; and sister, Verdonna Campbell.
He was a masonry laborer with Union Local #773.
Charles honorably served our country in the United States Air Force during the Cold War.
He enjoyed being outdoors, collecting Case knives, reading, fishing, and tending to his garden when he was still able. Roy also loved to entertain his friends and spend time with family.
