Carolyn Elaine (Calhoun) Hanner

Carolyn Elaine Hanner, 73, of Carterville, passed away Saturday, April 1, 2023, at her home, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville, with Rev. Ralph Brandon and Diana Rice officiating. Burial will be in Blairsville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the family and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Carolyn was born January 20, 1950, in Carbondale, to George T. and Elizabeth A. (Darnell) Calhoun. She married Sheldon Ron Hanner on July 4, 1994, in DuQuoin. He preceded her in death on December 7, 2011.

She is survived by her daughters, Katherine Elaine (Billy) Hall, and Rachael Ann Goins and her family; grandchildren, Jory and Zachary Trott; sisters, Margaret (Earl) Taylor and Mary Rosalie Hardy; sister-in-law, Connie Calhoun; plus many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sheldon R. Hanner; grandson, JaVon Trott; sisters, Betty Tottleben and Linda Calhoun; and brothers, George Calhoun and Billy (Debbie) Tottleben.

She was a talented seamstress who was most recently working for Teresa Hubbs at Mr. Tuxedo in Carterville. Her talent knew no bounds-from altering wedding dresses to making the costume for the mascot of the former Miner’s Baseball Team-she could sew or alter almost anything. Carolyn previously owned Stitches, a sewing business, in Energy for several years.

Carolyn was a faithful member of God’s House of Prayer in Carterville. She had an amazing musical gift of song writing and singing that was handed down from God.

She could often be found at the Carterville McDonald’s, visiting with friends.
