Carol Adeline North-Hampton 85, of Carterville, passed away on Thursday, January 8th, 2026, while at the Herrin Hospital.
Carol was born June 28, 1940, to Hugh H. North and Sylvia (Chamness) North.
Carol attended the Carterville School System, graduating from high school in 1958 and graduated from college in 1962 from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
Carol briefly worked as a High School Physical Ed Teacher and then took off for an exciting life in NYC in the mid 60’s. Carol worked at the Golden Press/Golden Books in Manhattan for many years, until she retired. She edited and wrote children's Golden Books.
She was united in marriage to her High School Sweetheart, James Hampton on January 5, 2006, in Leesburg, Florida. Carol then moved back to Carterville, settling into small town life again.
Carol was an avid flower gardener. She loved her flowers and always had flowers on display in her home. Carol also loved to ride bicycles. In her younger years she biked all along the east coast, taking many trips with her sister, Marlene. Carol also loved Kris Kristofferson’s music and was a huge fan.
Survivors include her many nieces and nephews, Kim D. North, Robin H. North (Pat North), Dana Earl, and David Earl; many great and grand nieces and nephews; stepchildren, daughter, Mary Lynne Hampton; sons, James Michael Hampton, and John (Alicia) Hampton; grandchildren, Andrew (Emma) Hampton, Emily (Lewis) Matthias, Molly Hampton, Claire Hampton, and Grace Hampton; great-grandson, Graham Matthias; great-granddaughter, Palmer; brother-in-law, Tom (Karen) Hampton; niece, Jamie (Robert) Wright; nephew, Ethan (Cara) Hampton; many great nieces and nephews; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hampton; brother, Ronald H. North; and sister, Marlene Earl.
Carol especially loved children and babies and was affectionately known to the youngest members of her family as "Miss Carol”. She was cherished by all her family and friends and will forever be missed.
Graveside services will be held at a later date at Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville.
