Carlagene “Carla” Olkoski, 83, of Hurst, left her body to join Rudy on the Golden Shores, on November 11, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on March 15, 1940, to William Carl and Cecile (Lyons) Turpin, in West Frankfort. Carla married her true love, Rudy Olkoski, on June 24, 1961. He preceded her in death on May 2, 2005.
Carla was baptized in Christ in 1953, and graduated from West Frankfort High School in the class of 1958. She enlisted in the United States Air Force for three years and served in Texas, Alaska, and Michigan. In July of 1970, Carla was hired by the United States Postal Service in West Frankfort and became their first female city carrier. She continued her career with the Postal Service, serving in many roles and in many communities, for 22 years, retiring as the Postmaster of Steeleville. She also had the honor of being a Kentucky Colonel.
Carla was a charter member of the Women in Military Service Memorial Foundation.
Her smile would light up the room when she walked in. She was happiest reading, doing crossword puzzles, or spending time at the casinos. She enjoyed time spent with her daughters and great granddaughter, Lexi May.
Carla is survived by her three daughters, Denise Olkoski of Cambria, Suzy (Randy) Pullum of Carterville, and Julie (Mike) Dagley of Carterville, grandchildren, Tera (Darrin Pulley) Romines, Randall (Chrissy) Romines, and Trevor (Kaylin) Pullum; six great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; sister, Kay Johns of Maryland; and a special sister-in-law, Karen Hemphill of Hurst.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother.
Consistent with Carla’s wishes, she will be cremated and there will be private services. We will miss them forever.
Memorial contributions can be made in her name to Cambria Christian Church.
