Betty Lou McGovern, 90, of Murphysboro and formerly of Granite City and Arlington Heights, passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at the home of her daughter, surrounded by her family.
She was born on August 8, 1933, in Granite City, Illinois, to James C. and Pearl (Dortch) Stubblefield. She married Gerald Hugh McGovern on September 5, 1953, in Granite City. He preceded her in death on October 31, 2017.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Anne (Kelly) Baird and Sarah (William) White; sons, Timothy (Marlene) McGovern and Patrick (Denise) McGovern; grandchildren, James (Tiffany) McGovern, Caitlin (Ted) McGovern-Yelton, Amanda (Matt) Schwellenbach, Allison McGovern, Daniel McGovern, Matthew Wilhelm, Eric Wilhelm, Gregory Wilhelm, Elizabeth White, Andrew White, Joshua White, Rachel White, and Steven White; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded by her parents; husband; and grandchild, Kenneth Michael Wilhelm.
Betty worked as a medical transcriptionist for Northwest Community Health Care. She also worked at a local bank in accounting services. In addition, Betty was also a school secretary for Edgar Allan Poe Elementary School and had worked as a health aide. Betty enjoyed volunteering and playing the organ at several churches. She was an animal lover who liked to spend time doing needle point, knitting, and crocheting.
