Barbara Louise Phillips, 92, of Carterville, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2024, at her home in Carterville, surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Monday, June 17, 2024, at Christian Covenant Fellowship Church in Carterville, with Rev. Ralph Brandon officiating. Burial will be in Egyptian Memorial Gardens in Energy. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the church.
Memorial contributions can be made to Christian Covenant Fellowship Church or to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
Barbara was born January 6, 1932, in Herrin, to Ray and Alice E. (Casey) Buckner. She married Douglas Eugene Phillips on July 8, 1950, in Piggott, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on December 26, 2003.
She is survived by her children, Douglas Jamie (Joyce) Phillips and Melissa Ann (Alvah “Al”) Guess; grandchildren, Tom (Jody) Cassel, Christopher (Misty) Phillips, Christina (Mike) Wilcox, and Brandon Guess; great-grandchildren, Samantha Cassel, Jacob Cassel, Jordan Cassel, Carter Phillips, Cooper Phillips, Corbin Phillips, Teagan Phillips, Michael Wilcox, Samantha Wilcox, and Abigail Wilcox; sister, Jessie Helsey; brother, Louis “Buck” Buckner; and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Carl Richard “Dick” Buckner, and Joe Howard Brandon.
After graduating high school at the age of 16, she began fulltime employment at the Bank of Herrin in the Loan Department. She subsequently worked as a bookkeeper at Stotlar Lumber in Carbondale, Beasely Lumber Company in Cambria, and then Weller Plumbing in Carbondale over a period of many years. She was a member of Christian Covenant Fellowship Church in Carterville.
Barbara treasured her relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, His Word, and family. She enjoyed games, especially Scrabble, reading, antiquing, music, and collecting teapots, cups, and jewelry. Knowing the power of the tongue to speak life, she encouraged with her words and deeds. She had a sweet smile and a sweet, sweet spirit. She leaves a legacy of faith, love, grace, acceptance, forgiveness, kindness, and gentleness to all who knew her.
