Anna Laura Vaughn, 94, passed quietly at her Carbondale home on June 18, 2022. “Aunt Annie”, as we knew her, was a resident of Carbondale with family roots in Blairsville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Jennie Cochran; her brothers, Lyman, Don, Victor, Kenneth and Charles; as well as her beloved husband of 50 plus years, Victor.
Annie and Victor managed a local children's home for a time and eventually managed two off campus apartment complexes for SIU. They did live for a time in California and Texas but southern Illinois always drew them back.
Annie leaves many nieces and nephews around the country who have wonderful memories of her zany sense of humor. She once painted her father's fingernails as he slept on the couch. That inventive adventure led to a lifetime of inspired artistic creativity.
Victor and Annie loved to dance and were well known in area clubs throughout the Seventies and Eighties. A lifelong animal lover, Annie was a friend to every dog. She was a steadfast patron of the Humane Society and once graced the cover of the Cache Creek animal shelter's brochure.
Annie loved to read, especially Somerset Maugham. Some words of wisdom that she admired were: "No time on earth is long enough to share with those we love or prepare our hearts for goodbye".
Annie Vaughn was truly loved and will be missed.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
Riggin-Pillatsch & Burke Funeral Home in Carterville assisted the family with cremation services.
